THE WINERY

The winery we will visit is one of  the only thirteen Vino de Pago wineries that exist in Spain. “Vino de Pago” is a classification for the highest category on the quality scale of Spanish wines (similar to the French appellations) and means that in addition to having a proven track record of consistent quality, the wines have to be both produced from estate-grown grapes and also have to be processed and aged in a winery (bodega) located on the estate.

It is a privileged place for wine lovers. The winery, designed by Rafael Moneo, the history and the legends to be found in the smaller buildings, a magnificent natural place and the exclusive wines make for a unique environment on the Saint James’ Way. A place with something for all your senses to enjoy.

This winery is the first establishment in the North of Spain to have received the bodega recognition as a “Vino de Pago” which gives them their own Denomination of Origin, exclusively for their 130 hectares, a level superior to with the Denomination of Origin Qualified.

This winery values not only the climate, the geology, the passing of the years, history, bothold and new architecture…, it guards a way of understanding viticulture and life. It is, an “almost secret” enclave.

GETARIA

Having set the mood with these savory visit, you’ll be just about ready for lunch. Today it will be by the sea, in one of the typical grilled fish restaurants at the harbor of the captivating fishing town of Getaria.After lunch, go into town and take pleasure in a relaxing stroll with your guide through the enchanting Medieval streets of the center, and the picturesque color and charm of the fisherman’s houses with their beautiful wooden balconies. The town’s location, perched on the hills overlooking the sea, offers spectacular views that will stay in your memory forever.

CHEESE TASTING:

After this, it’s time to savor the exceptional quality of another culinary icon of the area, Idiazabal cheese. You will visit a traditional artisan cheese producer high in the rolling Basque hills. CAVE STYLE WINERY VISIT

Right in the center of Laguardia, and under a family house, we will visit a local cave-style winery to learn about their wine making process and taste their wines in the cave. Entry tickets are included.

LAGUARDIA VILLAGE

It is situated on a hill and is surrounded by a wall that sent up the King Sancho the Strong of Navarre and there are still five gates to the city.  Its streets and corners preserved medieval taste great. Its economy is based on the wine industry with many subterranean cave-wine-cellar

PREHISTORICAL MONUMENTS

After lunch we will visit a single-chamber megalithic tomb, Dolmen “House of The Sorceress”, it  is one of the largest dolmens in the Basque Country.

PAMPLONA

We will explore the city from the famous festival of the RUNNING OF THE BULLS . Its heritage and monuments, and various celebrations taking place throughout the year,m makes this city to become a recipient of national and international tourism. Internationally renowned San Fermin festival and its running of the bulls, filling the streets of thousands of foreigners coming from all over the world. Festivities begin with the launch of chupinazo (shuttle) from the balcony of City Hall at noon on July 6 and end at midnight on the night of July 14 with the “Poor me”, a farewell song . His worldwide fame is a recent phenomenon, linked also to the publicity given by Ernest Hemingway.

OTXAGABIA

In our way to the Pyrennees we will stop in this small mountain village for lunch. We will recommend to you a Cider-house for lunch. A typical place where they have home-mado cider and you could serve yourself as much as you want form the big barrels!
CROSSING THE PYRENEES

The crossing is spectacular. A winding way that leaves from Ochagavia will take us to the top of Mount Larrau, where we will enter in France. We will drive down all the way, avoiding road-crossing sheep and cattle and we will head up again to the forest of Irati.

SAINT JEAN PIED DE PORT

The town was once a part of the Spanish province of Navarra and the Basque language is still spoken on both sides of the border and they still share similar traditions.The town has traditionally been an important point on the Way of St. James, the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, as it stands at the base of the Roncevaus Pass across the Pyrenees.

HENDAIA

The longest beach of the Basque Country, Sundays are the best days to try the delicious oysters in beachfront stalls! After a short stop, we will depart to Saint Jean de Luz through the beautiful coastal “La Corniche Road”

SAINT JEAN DE LUZ

Former Basque Corsairs’  capital, It was an important point on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, and became rich in the 16th century from fishing and whaling. Piracy, added brought wealth to the town. The ‘finest moment’ for the town was in 1660, when Louis XIV married Marie-Thérèse of Spain in the town church – the Basque church of St John the Baptist

BIARRITZ

One of the most posh beach resorts of the Basque Coast. It is a luxurious seaside town and is popular with tourists and surfers. Biarritz also boasts some of the best beaches in Europe. Biarritz’s became more renowned in 1854 when Empress Eugenie (the wife of Napoleon III) built a palace on the beach (now the Hôtel du Palais). The British royal family and European royalty regularly took vacations in Biarritz.

HONDARRIBIA

One of the most beautiful towns of the Basque Country, it’s medieval old part, is one of the few fortified towns in the Basque Country. Its walls, most of which are still standing and are constantly being restored, give it a special appearance by evoking an epic past and by impregnating every corner, alley and square with aromas, flavors and sounds that take us back to other times. We could also find the typical Basque fishermen houses, with colorful balconies filled up with heaps of flowers.

GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM

Designed by the North American architect Frank O. Gehry, this unique Museum built on a 32,500 square meter site in the center of Bilbao represents an amazing construction feat. The building itself is an extraordinary combination of interconnecting shapes. Impressive limestone blocks contrast with curved architectural forms covered in titanium. Glass curtain walling provides the building with the light and transparency it needs. Explore the museum by yourself, an audio guide is included in the ticket price.

SAN JUAN DE GAZTELUGATXE

The access is spectacular. A winding way that leaves from the mainland and crosses an ancient stone bridge takes you to the top zone of the small island after 237 steps.

The hermitage on the top of the island houses a number of emotive offerings from sailors who have been saved from shipwreck.

According to an ancient tradition, once you have reached the hermitage it is necessary to touch to the bell three times and to make a wish. The effort necessary to arrive at the hermitage is valued according to tradition.

GUERNICA

Last stop in  Gernika. On April 26th 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, the town was razed to the ground by German aircrafts,sent by Hitler to support Franco’s troops.

When Picasso painted the Guernika in 1937, could not imagine that its vision of the bombing would become antiwarlike symbol.

Near Summit Of Mount Ernio: some beautiful views of the inland valleys, optionally you could make a 15 minutes walk out in the fields.

Sanctuary Of Loiola:  an impressive monument, built between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries around the Casa Torre is the birthplace of the founder of the Society of Jesus, St. Ignatius of Loyola. In the west wing of the building is located an interesting museum about the life and work of St. Ignatius and in the east wing of the building is located Slideshow Museum and where they are valuable pieces of religious art.

Mount Izarraitz: Drive through narrow mountain roads, villages, sheep and cows … we will discover the essence of the Basque Country! Stop at the foothills of Mount Izarraitz to have beautiful views of the mountainous interior as well as the coastline.

The place where the green mountains, suddenly meet the Atlantic Ocean! Take a walk of 20 minutes for a nice spot to discover an amazing place! At this point of the coast, the mountains drop steeply to sea level, with wonderful views and let us look at the raw rock formations formed over millions of years.

Getaria The charming little fishing village of Getaria. Home of Juan Sebastian Elcano (Getaria 1487-1526) the man who was first to sail around the world. It is probably one of the most treasured medieval centers which best reflects the passing of time. The quality of the buildings, its urban harmony and other factors make Getaria a privileged place in the geography of Gipuzkoa.

Zarautz: The strong marine tradition of whale hunting lasted until the 16th century. The strong tradition of tourism began shortly after the summer stays of Queen Elizabeth II, so it is from the second half of the 19th century the true takeoff of Zarautz as a tourist destination began.

• On Arrival at Maun Airport you will take a micro light flight to your Lodge (attention: luggage is limited to 20 kg in a soft bag including hand luggage)

Makgadikgadi Pans National Park stretches away from the banks of the now dry Boteti River, through its interior of scrubland and grasslands, ending at the extraordinary salt pans in the east. The Makgadikgadi Pans are the remains of a great lake that once occupied a significant portion of Northern Botswana, covering approximately 60 000 square kilometers. After the start of the rainy season, this desert area teems with wildlife as herds of zebra and wildebeest graze to their heart’s content on the wide open green grassland plains of the Makgadikgadi. During the wet season there is an influx of migratory bird species, while resident desert species welcome their visitors by showing off their breeding plumage. At the onset of the dry season, this area is populated by up to 30000 wildebeest and zebra, which have remained after migrating down to the Makgadikgadi in their search for wet season grazing. The migration brings with it an increase in levels of predator activity.

Days 1+ 2 - Your Accommodation in the Makgadikgadi - Leroo La Tau - 5 Star Accommodation

Leroo La Tau is built on cliffs over 10m high above this arid riverbed, and in the dry season wildlife concentrates around the water hole in front of the lodge. The main reception and lounge area of Leroo La-Tau is located on top of these cliffs; this raised vantage point ensures unsurpassed views of these desert inhabitants as they congregate below to quench their terrible thirst. The lodge offers 12 luxury thatch and glass suites with en-suite bathrooms, each one a raised wooden platform. The main lounge and dining area, with its inviting wooden and thatch finishes, offers guests the opportunity to sit back and relax at the bar while listening to the wide variety of night sounds so characteristic of the African bush. Alternatively you can lounge around the pool while appreciating the herds of zebra and wildebeest which are often seen around the lodge grounds and the waterhole.

The Moremi Game Reserve was originally the hunting grounds of the Banoka, the River Bushmen, closely related in physique and language to the San of the Kalahari. They hunted the area as long as 10,000 years ago. Later, the Bia Tawana settled here and used the area for subsistence hunting and cattle farming. The Moremi was set aside in 1962 for this purpose and was extended in 1970 to encompass most of Botswana’s north eastern and central Okavango Delta. The first reserve excluded Chief’s Island as this was the chief’s personal hunting ground, but in 1976 the tribe decided to include Chief’s Island, and in 1991 the reserve was further enlarged by 1,046km². The Moremi Game Reserve stretches over an area of 4,872km², including both delta and desert, and supporting a vast range of animals including cheetah, wild dog and an abundance of birdlife.

Camp Moremi is located in the Moremi Game Reserve of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. The tree lodge is an elevated thatch and timber structure consisting of a main lounge, library, dining room and cocktail bar. The sun deck looks out over the Xakanaxa Lagoon. Each of Camp Moremi’s 11 East-African-style safari tents is situated on a raised teak platform and is furnished with a wardrobe, luggage rack, dressing table, bedside pedestal and director’s chairs. The Okavango Delta

In northern Botswana lies a vast inland delta in an otherwise arid region. This ecosystem offers the ultimate in African bush- and water- game viewing experiences. The Okavango River has its source in the highlands of central Angola, where torrential summer rains feed this young river. It then drains to the southeast for 1,000 kilometres until it fans out across the vast plains of the Kalahari, forming the world’s largest oasis: the 15,000 square-kilometre Okavango Delta. The Delta itself is a complex of inland waterways, with an intricate maze of meandering channels and isolated islands, fringed by tangled old riverine forests and broad flood plains with water levels regulated by seasonal flooding. On the northeastern extremity of this «jewel of the Kalahari» is a mysterious overflow. This overflow, by way of erratic tectonic movements, links the Delta to the verdant plains of the Selinda Spillway, the swamps of Linyanti, the marshes of Savuti, the woodlands of the Chobe river and to the mighty Zambezi River and its Victoria Falls.

Camp Okavango is situated on the remote Nxaragha Island in the heart of the permanent Okavango Delta. The camp has 12 East African-style safari tents, each situated on raised teak platforms with en-suite bathrooms and private sun decks. Chobe National Park

Much of Botswana consists of flood plains, sandy depressions, grasslands and Kalahari-type desert. Chobe National Park, with an area of 1,1 million hectares is a combination of all these – a spectacular, game-rich wilderness interspersed with patches of swamp land and stands of Mopane, Kiaat, Teak and Acacia trees. It takes its name from the Chobe River, which forms an irregular boundary between Botswana and Namibia’s Caprivi Strip. The river, running from West to East, is known by other names further upstream; it starts as the Cuando River, which rises in Angola and soon becomes the Linyanti River, then the Itenge River and finally the Chobe River. The Chobe, in turn, is a major tributary of the Zambezi River. Chobe National Park offers a wide variety of habitats for the herds of elephants, buffaloes and zebras for which the park is world-famous. The game provides ample prey for predators such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas and wild dogs. Tiger-fish and bream lure fishermen to the papyrus-fringed waterways of the Linyanti River. The Chobe Riverfront is the park’s most densely game-populated area, and it may seem that the word ‘wildlife’ is synonymous with ‘elephant’: an estimated 73,000 elephants inhabit Chobe National Park, and herds numbering up to 500 can be seen on the river bank.

Chobe Game Lodge is the only permanent game lodge situated within the Chobe National Park. Victoria Falls form the greatest curtain of falling water in the world. They are 1,708 metres wide, 103 metres deep (at their highest point), and carry 500 million litres of water per minute in full flood. Benguerra has a total of 164 species of birds and the small patch of indigenous forest near the north point thrills with their sounds and those of squirrels and monkeys. Kruger National Park

Until the arrival of “Westernised men” in the late 19th century, the area covered by the Kruger Park probably looked much like it does now, vast and relatively undisturbed. In the 19th century, farmers settled and white hunters brought their formidable firepower to bear on the herds, taking a devastating toll on the buffalo, wildebeest and other species. The situation worsened during the Anglo-Boer war as the English hunted to supplement rations and the hungry black population scoured the countryside for food. It was in May 1926 that this enormous slice of territory was formally proclaimed a National Park and named in honour of Paul Kruger, who gave impetus to the creation of wildlife sanctuaries in the 1890s. With an almost 2,000,000 hectare expanse of savannah and bush, the Kruger Park is big game country. Lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and tens of thousands of antelope roam the sunlit plains. Leopards stalk during the night; shy bushbuck hide in the riverine bush; giraffe browse on the sweet-scented acacias and vultures wheel overhead, alert for kills and carcass. The Park counts 137 mammal species, about 500 bird species and more than 100 reptile varieties. The maximum speed in the park is 50km/h on tar roads and 40 km/h on gravel roads.

Day 1-2 – Kruger Park Accommodation

From my vantage point overlooking the Sand River, I can literally see buffalo and antelope grazing mere meters away from me. And I’m not in a Land Rover on some guided tour. I’m on the wooden deck at the gorgeous Singita Ebony Lodge, and this is really what I get to look at every day. The lodge itself is a wonderfully eclectic mix of colonial, African and modern styles, all combining to create a truly homely atmosphere. It’s impossible to not feel relaxed and indulged here. The lodge comprises a gymnasium, health spa, library and wine cellar, amongst other things and my luxurious suite was air-conditioned with a really spacious living area. Activities include mountain biking, archery and off-course game drives with professional guides and trackers. The food is great, the scenery spectacular and the service and hospitality superb. They call this ‘armchair safari’?, and I could get used to this!
