FOOTBOLT SYRAH 2007, MCLAREN VALE, AUSTRALIA

Wine Spectator 92 pts
Footbolt was a colt born in 1898 and bought for 400 guineas, a sum that was quickly recovered after 6 races. This and subsequent triumphs in 1912 allowed Joe to buy the vineyards and this wine still uses grapes from some of those vineyards purchased by Joe almost a century ago. The wine spent 20 months in French and American oak barrels both new and used. It is deep ruby purple in color and the nose shows intense aromas of berries, black plums, jam, coffee, pepper, accompanied by rich notes of chocolate, mint and cedar. After spending some time in the glass there are more complex aromas of cassis, spices, game and dried fruits. The palate is very well structured with sublime fruit and fully integrated tannin providing great texture to support aromas of plum, blackcurrant and spicy flavors that attack the palate. This is followed by a velvety and spicy black fruit finish. This is Syrah at his finest and one you should definitely put in the trolley. Alcohol: 14.50 Acidity: 3.30 PH: 3.38
